Phoenix Dawn

The Webcomic -- Setting Info (Visual)

A Brief Background

The Starship Ankaa was a small ship owned by the Star-by-Star Exploration Program to go out, find strange stuff, then poke it until a bigger ship arrives. She had a crew of four, and was slated for a six-month tour of duty towards glactic center from Earth.

However, the ship managed to accumulate three stowaways, who poked the wrong button in the engine room. The ship was pushed off-course in FTL space (that is a Bad Thing) and ended up in a universe where things work quite differently than the crew were used to. To make matters worse, the local ruler decided to impound the ship and the stowaways. Vague mentions of prophecies and Really Bad Things and Quests are made.

Protagonists

Rikayo "Riki" Darenka: The Ankaa's engineer and quite possibly the most naive man alien person in the galaxy. Is the hero, by virtue of the fact one of the stowaways is his kid sister and his parents will go apeshit if he doesn't come back without her.

Melody: The Ankaa's comm tech and impromptu social sciencist. Is a rather sarcastic half-alien childhood friend of Riki.

Phillee: The Ankaa's captain, doctor, life-science person and self-appointed morale officer. Is the oldest member of the crew -- and also Melody's adoptive mother -- but doesn't always act like it.

Alriai "Alri" Aborin: The Ankaa's pilot. The only person on the crew that doens't know everyone else before the mission begins. A bit of a romantic, but tries not to let it get in the way of her common sense.

Kai Shoresprite: The native guide the crew meets on Hinode. He's only a foot tall (and not technically a he) but both his intellect and ego are massive.

Antagonists

Lord Delwyn Hywel: Ruler of Hinoiri. Smart, ambitious, and charismatic -- very dangerous combination. Currently has mysterious plans to do something that requires three children. Our Heroes have a feeling this is nothing good.

General Faris Kimiko al Fahd: Delwyn's subordinate, one of two sent to keep Our Heroes from stopping Delwyn. Clever, competent and a master of disguise.

General Philandre Murchadh: Delwyn's subordinate, one of two sent to keep Our Heroes from stopping Delwyn. Seemingly happy-go-lucky, he is one to watch, simply because one really shouldn't trust anyone who doesn't stop smiling.

Shashi Matsushita: Delwyn's personal gate mage. Quiet and mysterious, he doesn't usually say what he's thinking. Which is probably for the best, as usually he is thinking about how stupid everyone else is -- he IS a teenager.

Arianna: Mysterious child-figure that folows Delwyn around, occassionally tossing out ideas, but mostly there to give him someone to talk to.

Minor Characters

Aris Darenka: Riki's little sister and Stowaway #1. This wasn't her idea at all, and she just knew it would get them in trouble.

Saria Terrence: Stowaway #2. Oops -- even if this was her idea, she hadn't intended for it to happen. It was an accident, honest.

Miklin D'lani: Stowaway #3. HE knew this was a bad idea, but went along with it because he was bored.

Ravi Falk: A rather unusual looking Merfolk, but he seems nice enough.

Auxiliary Canon

Elise Connor: She begs the question, what is a human doing in a universe where they never evolved? Apparently fortune telling and being mysterious.

My Comments

Phoenix Dawn was my attempt to mix SF and fantasy. It's gone through a lot of changing as I worked on it (and still is -- I have things using the characters covering over a decade). I threw in a lot of incoherent references to various mythologies and religions. Not to say I don't like the comic, but I'm changing a lot when (if) I revisit it.
