Physical Description
Phillee looks like a very typical Starsailor, with medium-blue skin and green hair. She's at about average height, 5 feet 6 inches. She is somewhat androgynous -- while she has wide hips and narrow shoulders, she is flat-chested. She has long, pointed ears -- which she can move to show her mood -- webbed fingers and toes -- though the gap between her thumb and pointer finger isn't webbed -- gill slits on her neck, a closeable nose (like a seal's) and a clear third eyelid. She has a round face, and an average build. Phillee tries to wear feminine clothing for her location, aware most humans cannot tell she's a woman short of a blood test or strip search. She wears her hair long, usually held back by a clip. She also is usually seen with a pin featuring a Serpinski's Triangle somewhere on her person. She has a noticeable accent when speaking in English.
Personality
Phillee is a very outgoing, bright and cheerful person. She is also a bit of a scatterbrain -- while she would never let an important detail slide, to the point of seeming like a different person when 'on the job', she tends to forget things like grocery shopping and cooking. Yes, she will eat whatever she finds in the fridge, whether or not it's supposed to be cooked. She is highly compassionate, and will not tolerate physical harm coming to anything -- even an enemy. Mental harm is another thing, and she is quite willing to bend the ethical rules covering use of psionics if she thinks she will save a life or two -- instead of getting violent when faced with a violent opponent, she resorts to the fact she's a pretty skilled telepath. She cannot stand to see someone suffering and considers it her business to help them -- whether they want it or not. She is a nosy busybody and proud of it. She also has a perverted sense of humor and a bit of a reputation as the community bicycle ('everyone's had a ride'). Her main hobbies are theater and music -- her favorites are operas and musicals and vocal folk music and ballads, anything that tells a story.
History
Phillee was born on the backwater planet of Nemea, a mixed human-Starsailor colony -- explaining her ability to speak English. When her brother went off to study in the Sol System, a young Phillee accompanied him, and stayed for her own university education. After Phillee completed medical school and her residency, she entered service in SSEP for the first time as ship's doctor for a year. She returned to Earth to get a job as a neurologist in one of the hospitals in the Denver area. It was there she came into contact with, and eventually adopted, Melody. After Melody had been sent off to college, Phillee returned to the SSEP service. After a two-year stint on the Whirlpool, she was made captain of the Ankaa.
Relationships
- Phillee and Melody have a relationship that is more like sisters than parent/child. Both trusts the other to look out for herself, with only a little help. Phillee does tease Melody a bit.
- Phillee treats both Riki and Alri with a sort of informal politeness -- she realizes that both Darynese view her through a generation gap. Add to that the fact both are closer to her daughter than to her and are both under her command. Riki is one of the few people Phillee won't crack vulgar jokes around, mostly because she got sick of having to explain them.
- Phillee gets along rather well with Kai -- the two have personalities that are similar enough to mesh well.
- She doesn't give Philandre a second thought until, on Melody and Alri's urging, she uses a mental magic spell to get a better sense of his personality and motives. Then she is distinctly NOT HAPPY with him.
- Elise is Phillee's beloved mentor, and Phillee likes her and will listen to her opinions on most things with a measure of respect.
Special Abilities
Telepathy/empathy, minor telekinesis, untrained minor precognition, short-ranged teleportation, enhanced telepathy via magic. As a Starsailor, she also can hold her breath for nearly a half hour, and spend most of the day underwater with the help of her gills. Her hearing is top-notch and she's a powerful swimmer. She also has perfect pitch.
